Evolve Move Play w/ Rafe Kelley

This week’s episode features one of my all-time favorite guests, Rafe Kelley of Evolve Move Play.  I’ve been following Rafe’s work for years, and many of his concepts have worked their way into my own practice and teaching methodology.  The “80/20” play rule, starting from a fully realized natural movement practice and working backwards to assess where isolation can be beneficial (and not the other way around), and nourishment vs stimulation – these are all concepts that have held tried and true for me and my students.

In our conversation, we weave in and out of a variety of topics – from major Evolve Move Play concepts in Part 1 of our talk to the state of Natural Movement in fitness in Part 2.  We cover a lot of ground, and I think you will really enjoy Rafe’s unique perspectives.

Exuberant Animal w/ Frank Forencich

Frank Forencich is the Exuberant Animal and, in my opinion, the father of the play movement in fitness today.  His work is influential across many fields, and includes the books Exuberant AnimalBeautiful PracticeStresscraft, and his upcoming book on The Long Body and Warrior Activism (two topics we cover at length in this podcast!)

We also touch on:

  • the importance of high/contrast living
  • habitat, exposure, and tribe
  • the real meaning of holistic
  • play, work, and the balance between
  • big paleo and what the current paleo movement is missing

…and so much more!

And subscribe to his email  – he gives you an awesome PDF chalk full of play ideas.  Many of these featured in the original Exuberant Animal Playbook that helped inspire me to launch the Ninja Academy here at Force!

See&Do w/ Julie Angel

Julie Angel Headshot

This week I am so thankful to have the amazing Julie Angel on the podcast!  Julie is an independent filmmaker, author (“Breaking the Jump”), and has perhaps the coolest PhD thesis of all time, “Cine Parkour:  a cinematic and theoretical contribution to the practice of parkour”, AKA observing and talking to parkour athletes to better understand what they do and why they do it.  Why didn’t I think of this when I was in school?!

We cover a lot of ground here, including:

  • How she first got started in MovNat and Parkour
  • What it takes for movement “ignition”
  • Yamakasi: the beginnings of parkour
  • The evolution of coaching in parkour
  • Breaking the Jump
  • See & Do

…and much much more!

Please check out, like, and follow Julie’s ongoing projects.

Original Strength w/ Tim Anderson

Tim Profile Pic

This week I am so thankful to have long-time friend and mentor Tim Anderson on the pod. Tim is the co-founder of Original Strength Systems and Original Strength Institute. Original Strength is built around the idea that “you were not made to be broken” and seeks to “set the world free through movement.”  That message really resonated with me when I went to my first OS workshop over three years ago, and has inspired me ever since.

Quick story in case you don’t know – after the first Original Strength Level 2 (now Pro Reset) course, I was overwhelmed with info and reached out to Tim for help.  Not only did he take me under his wing, he helped me get to multiple events to help teach and put me on the fast track to becoming an Instructor for OS.  His door has always been open and it amazes me how he has done this not only for me, but for so many others.

We cover a ton of ground in this conversation – essentially it is me boiling 3-years of “What I’ve Learned from Tim” down into a 90 minute podcast.  We cover the resets, recharging your batteries, becoming your own chef, mentorship, and much much more!  I really loved this time I got with Tim and hope you do too!
